USA Cricket board suspended by ICC

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended USA Cricket (USAC) with immediate effect, citing repeated governance failures and breaches of membership obligations. The suspension marks a reset as the ICC seeks to overhaul the sport’s administration in a crucial market. However, the national teams will still be allowed to compete in upcoming ICC events, including the 2025 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, as well as the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

USA Cricket board suspended by ICC

This action follows a three-month ultimatum granted at the ICC’s annual general meeting in July 2024. USAC had been directed to conduct free and fair elections and implement governance reforms but failed to meet the requirements. The ICC noted that USAC did not establish a functional governance structure, made little progress toward recognition from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), and engaged in actions that damaged cricket’s reputation in the USA and globally.

The ICC clarified that suspending USAC was “unfortunate but necessary” to safeguard the sport’s long-term interests. Importantly, the decision does not jeopardize cricket’s inclusion in the LA28 Olympics. To ensure continuity, the ICC will temporarily oversee the management and administration of USA national teams, prioritizing the interests of players and the game.

Earlier this year, the ICC’s Normalisation Committee, led by chairman Jay Shah, had outlined a six-step roadmap for USAC. It included appointing three new independent directors, dissolving the existing board, holding fresh elections, and securing NGB status with the USOPC. Despite consultations with USAC leadership, the board failed to implement the reforms within the deadline.

For reinstatement, USAC must demonstrate significant changes to its governance and operations as outlined by the Normalisation Committee. The ICC stated that it remains committed to supporting cricket’s growth in the United States and will continue providing consultative support during the restructuring process.

While the suspension highlights ongoing administrative challenges, the ICC emphasized that athletes and the sport’s progress in the US would not be compromised. The move is seen as a decisive step to protect cricket’s credibility and strengthen its presence ahead of a landmark Olympic debut.
