Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced a substantial £35 million investment in cricket across England and Wales, with a primary focus on strengthening grassroots participation. This move aims to address longstanding concerns regarding the dominance of players from private schools in national teams and intends to broaden access to the sport for individuals from diverse backgrounds.

The investment comes amidst scrutiny over the prevalence of private school players within England squads, sparking discussions about inclusivity and the challenges faced by less privileged individuals in accessing cricket. It aligns with the government’s broader strategy to encourage one million more young people to engage in physical activity by 2030. Furthermore, there is a particular emphasis on the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2026 and the men’s tournament in 2030.

Sunak, reflecting on his own childhood experiences watching Hampshire play in Southampton, emphasized cricket’s potential for growth and inclusivity. The investment will see the construction of 16 all-weather cricket domes in host cities of the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup, providing safe and accessible spaces for training and play, especially in diverse communities.

Richard Thompson, chair of the England and Wales Cricket Board, welcomed the decision, aiming to make cricket the most inclusive sport in the country. Additionally, £14 million will support charities like Chance to Shine, Lord’s Taverners, and ACE, facilitating cricket participation for nearly a million children from African or Caribbean backgrounds over the next five years. Veteran pacer James Anderson voiced support for the initiative, recognizing the importance of providing opportunities for state school students.
