Jonathan Trott will remain Afghanistan’s head coach until the end of 2025, following a successful year for the team. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has extended his contract by 12 months after Afghanistan reached their first-ever World Cup semi-final in 2024. Trott’s next assignment will be the ODI leg of Afghanistan’s multi-format tour of Zimbabwe, but he will miss the other formats due to personal reasons. During his absence, Hamid Hassan will serve as head coach, while Nawroz Mangal will act as assistant coach.
Trott’s tenure has been marked by significant achievements. Under his guidance, Afghanistan made history by reaching the 2024 World Cup semi-finals, with standout victories over New Zealand and Australia in the Group and Super-Eights stages. The team also triumphed over South Africa and Bangladesh in ODI series held in Sharjah.
Afghanistan’s next major global tournament is the Champions Trophy in 2025, marking their debut in the event after finishing in the top eight of the 2023 ODI World Cup points table.
Trott, who took over as head coach in July 2022 with an initial 18-month contract, has seen Afghanistan win 14 of their 34 ODIs and 20 of their 44 T20Is under his leadership. His first coaching role was as a consultant with Scotland during the 2021 T20 World Cup. As a player, Trott was a vital figure in England’s 2010-11 Ashes victory, scoring 3835 runs in 52 Tests and 2819 runs in ODIs.
