Dhoni: I Just Want to Enjoy Playing for the Next Few Years

MS Dhoni expressed his desire to enjoy the remaining years of his cricket career during a promotional event in Goa. While his availability for IPL 2025 remains uncertain, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan remains hopeful that Dhoni will participate in the upcoming season. Dhoni emphasized that he wants to relive the joy of playing cricket as he did in childhood, saying, “I just want to enjoy whatever last few years of cricket I’m able to play.” He acknowledged that professional sports can make it challenging to enjoy the game fully due to emotional commitments.

As the October 31 deadline approaches for IPL franchises to submit their retained player lists, Dhoni is eligible to be retained by CSK as an uncapped player. This eligibility comes after the IPL reinstated a rule allowing players retired from international cricket for five years to be classified as uncapped.

Throughout IPL 2024, Dhoni batted lower in the order, limiting his appearances at the crease. He attributed this decision to workload management following knee surgery and the need to provide opportunities to players vying for spots in the T20 World Cup squad. “If others are doing their job well, why do I need to come up the order?” he stated, highlighting his focus on team success.

On the topic of Test cricket, Dhoni praised the evolution of the game, particularly the high-risk, aggressive style known as Bazball. He believes this change has made Test matches more result-oriented, reducing the likelihood of draws. Dhoni acknowledged the challenges of playing in drawn matches, stating that the most tiring moments occurred during the fifth day when results seemed inevitable. He appreciates the current trend towards decisive outcomes in Test matches, making them more engaging for players and fans alike.
