Travis Head has backed Sam Konstas to reclaim his spot as Australia’s opener for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa at Lord’s. With recent debutants impressing, Australia faces a selection dilemma ahead of the crucial match.
Konstas made a strong international debut against India at the MCG and won the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year award. However, he was left out of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and is unlikely to play in the second. Instead, the selectors opted for a “horses-for-courses” approach, pairing Head with Usman Khawaja.
Former captains Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke had advocated for Konstas’ retention with an eye on the WTC final, but selector Tony Dodemaide emphasized that this was not a development tour. The decision was justified as Head’s aggressive 57 off 40 balls helped Australia amass 654 for 6, their highest total in Asia.
Despite this, Head opening remains a situational strategy for subcontinent conditions. Australia’s batting lineup will likely change against South Africa, as Cameron Green nears full fitness and Josh Inglis impresses with a 90-ball century on debut.
“Most likely, I’d go back in the middle order, and Sam would open,” Head said. “It’s going to be tough to fit everyone in, but that’s a great problem to have.”
Konstas, who missed the first Test due to illness, resumed training on Tuesday. Head praised his fearless approach and potential, saying, “He’s got a huge future for Australia.”
Reflecting on his attacking knock in Galle, Head admitted it wasn’t a planned assault but rather an opportunity-based approach. “Sometimes, you have to take risks and push the game forward,” he said.
