In a crucial encounter for both teams in the ongoing IPL 2024, the Delhi Capitals (DC) benefited from a dream start thanks to a brilliant run-out by Sumit Kumar. Filling the void left by the injured David Warner, Kumar stepped up on the big stage, triggering a mini collapse in the Gujarat Titans’ (GT) batting order during Match 32.

With GT already reeling at 2 wickets down, Sai Sudharsan, coming in at No. 3, attempted a risky single off the very first delivery of the fifth over. The dismissal proved to be a turning point, leaving GT in a precarious position at 30-4 after just five overs.
The dismissal itself was a result of both Sumit Kumar’s exceptional fielding and Sai Sudharsan’s slight misjudgment. Sudharsan called for a quick single on a length delivery aimed at the middle stump. However, Kumar, stationed at mid-wicket, displayed remarkable reflexes. He pounced on the ball like a lightning bolt, diving full length and unleashing a rocket-like underarm throw towards the non-striker’s end.
Despite a desperate dive, Sai Sudharsan was well short of the crease, and the umpire’s finger went up. This crucial wicket by Sumit Kumar not only exposed the fragile GT batting line-up but also provided a much-needed boost to the struggling DC.
With DC currently sitting at just two wins from their first six matches, securing a victory against GT is critical for their playoff aspirations. Meanwhile, GT, who themselves have a mixed bag of three wins and three losses, need to regroup and find a way to weather this early storm if they are to chase down a competitive total.
