After the comeback of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in India’s T20 team, focus shifts to younger players aiming to secure spots for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Tilak Varma, despite a promising start with Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023, faces scrutiny for his inconsistent performances at the international level.

With the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to India’s T20 team, the spotlight is on young players to prove themselves ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup. Tilak Varma, who earned his place in the Indian team based on his performances for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023, has encountered challenges at the international level.
The 21-year-old Varma has scored two fifties in 16 T20 Internationals. While he had a promising debut series in the West Indies, his recent performances have been inconsistent, managing just 163 runs in 10 innings at an average of 23.28, with one fifty. In his last six innings, Varma has produced patchy scores of 12, 7 not out, 31 not out, 29, 0, and 26.
Following his dismissal for 26 in the first T20 International against Afghanistan on Thursday, former India batter Aakash Chopra questioned Varma’s place in the team. Chopra suggested that Varma might face exclusion in the next match, considering the availability of Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Chopra raised doubts about who would be dropped if both Kohli and Jaiswal return, stating that Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh are unlikely to be excluded.
Expressing dissatisfaction with wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, Chopra emphasized the importance of finishing matches to solidify one’s place in the team. He urged Jitesh Sharma to convert promising innings into higher scores and complete matches, especially with competition from players like Sanju Samson and the potential return of Rishabh Pant.
