West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a career that began in 2012. At 36 years old, Gabriel leaves behind a notable record with 59 Test matches, 25 ODIs, and two T20Is, amassing a total of 202 wickets.
Reflections on a Career

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Gabriel expressed his gratitude and reflections on his career. “Playing international cricket for the West Indies has brought me immense joy,” he said. “But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end.” He thanked God, Cricket West Indies administrators, coaches, and his teammates for their support throughout his journey. Gabriel also expressed his commitment to continue representing Trinidad and Tobago and various club and franchise teams globally.
Test Cricket Achievements
Gabriel was particularly effective in Test cricket, utilizing his height and strength to excel even on less responsive pitches. His standout performance came in June 2018, when he recorded the fourth-best match figures for a West Indian with 13 for 121 against Sri Lanka. His ability to generate pace and bounce earned him comparisons to legends like Patrick Patterson and Ian Bishop. By 2017, Gabriel had established himself as a regular member of the West Indies team and contributed to notable victories, including the win against England at Headingley.
Memorable Moments and Controversies
One memorable moment came when Gabriel, batting with West Indies nine down against Pakistan, went for a big shot with only seven balls left. He was bowled out, but his Player-of-the-Match performance in the earlier Test was crucial for West Indies.
Gabriel faced controversy in 2019 when he was banned for four ODIs for making an inappropriate remark. He accepted the sanction and apologized, though he later claimed the incident was exaggerated.
Recent Activities
Gabriel last played for the West Indies in July 2023 and has since continued in domestic cricket, including participation in the Abu Dhabi T10.
