Scotland opened their 2026 T20 World Cup account in emphatic fashion, crushing debutants Italy by 73 runs at Eden Gardens after a dominant all-round display led by George Munsey and Michael Leask.

Batting first, Scotland surged to a formidable 207 for 4 – the highest total by an Associate side at a men’s T20 World Cup. Munsey powered the innings with a blistering 84 from 54 balls, launching early assaults on Italy’s attack and racing to a 30-ball half-century after being dropped on 41. He shared a record 126-run opening stand with Michael Jones, giving Scotland a flying start before Italy briefly checked the momentum.
Middle-order impetus came from Brandon McMullen, whose four sixes kept the run rate soaring, while Leask produced a late cameo of 22 from just five balls to ensure a devastating finish. Italy’s bowlers managed a few late breakthroughs, but the damage had already been done.
Italy’s chase was rocked early, worsened by captain Wayne Madsen suffering a shoulder injury that ruled him out of batting. Leask then turned the contest decisively with the ball, striking with his first delivery and later ripping through the middle order to claim a career-best 4 for 17.
Resistance came mainly through brothers Ben Manenti and Harry Manenti, who briefly kept Italy in touch with an aggressive stand, highlighted by Ben’s rapid fifty. Once both fell in quick succession, however, the chase fizzled out at 311.
The comprehensive victory delivered Scotland their first points of the tournament and spoiled Italy’s maiden appearance on the world stage.
