Suryakumar Yadav is set to be appointed India’s new T20I captain ahead of Hardik Pandya for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Suryakumar Yadav T20I captain will succeed Rohit Sharma, who retired from T20Is, along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, after leading India to T20 World Cup victory in the Caribbean last month.
Hardik Pandya’s Experience and Fitness Concerns

Despite Hardik Pandya’s experience as Rohit’s deputy at the T20 World Cup and his leadership roles with Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians in the IPL, fitness concerns and workload management have influenced the decision against him. Hardik suffered an ankle injury during the 50-over World Cup at home last October-November and was out of action until the start of IPL 2024, when he returned to lead Mumbai. Since the beginning of 2022, Hardik has played in only 46 of the 79 T20Is India has contested.
Suryakumar Yadav’s Captaincy Credentials
Suryakumar Yadav, on the other hand, has previous captaincy experience with Mumbai in domestic cricket. Recently, he led India to a 4-1 series win over Australia in the T20I series last November, followed by a 1-1 series draw in South Africa. Suryakumar Yadav captaincy is also a key player in India’s first-choice XI in the T20I format.
The T20Is in Sri Lanka will be India’s first assignment under new coach Gautam Gambhir, who replaces Rahul Dravid after the T20 World Cup. This series marks the start of India’s preparations for the next T20 World Cup, which India will co-host in 2026.
A young Indian squad, led by Shubman Gill, recently returned from Zimbabwe after a 4-1 T20I series win, featuring only three players from the World Cup-winning team. The selectors will meet on Wednesday to finalize the touring party. Along with three T20Is, the tour will include three ODIs.
Fans eagerly await updates on the India T20 squad selection and the India vs. Sri Lanka T20 series. This change in leadership marks a significant moment in Indian cricket team news, highlighting Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership and the new direction under Gautam Gambhir as India gears up for future challenges.
