A small aircraft landing issue in Barbados has caused significant delays for the South African cricket team, ICC officials, and others involved in the T20 World Cup 2024 final in the USA and the West Indies. This tournament, already challenged by tight schedules and logistical challenges, now faces additional setbacks due to operational disruptions.

The incident involved a private aircraft with landing gear deployment problems at Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados. As a result, the airport was closed for inspections by aviation authorities and police. This led to the South African cricket team, their families, commentators, match officials, and ICC personnel being stranded at Trinidad’s airport.
Shortly before departure from Trinidad, pilots were informed of the runway closure in Bridgetown. Passengers were informed of a tentative rescheduled departure time of 4:30 PM, translating to nearly six hours of delay. The incident left the South African cricket team, their families, commentators, and match officials stranded at Trinidad’s airport. The unexpected situation also affected ICC personnel, causing widespread logistical challenges and uncertainty among those involved.
The upcoming final marks a historic occasion for South Africa’s men’s team, set for Saturday morning instead of the usual Sunday. This change breaks with tradition and adds anticipation to the event, highlighting its significance in cricket history. These adjustments were necessary due to weather delays affecting the semi-finals and the tournament’s tight schedule.
