Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer, citing back pain, opted out of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy quarterfinals, citing injury concerns. The National Cricket Academy (NCA) contradicted the claim, asserting Iyer has no ‘fresh injuries.’ Nitin Patel, NCA’s head of sports science, informed selectors via email about Iyer’s fitness after the second Test against England. He emphasized Iyer’s readiness and availability for selection.

This news follows BCCI Secretary Jay Shah’s statement that all main contract players must play red-ball cricket in the local circuit. Shah highlighted that players must join their state teams if asked by the coach or captain. Regarding reports about Ishan Kishan in the Ranji Trophy, Shah clarified the rule applies to all contracted players, not just Kishan.
Shah said there won’t be tolerance for excuses; players must follow orders from the selection committee, coach, and captain. He gave selectors the freedom to decide and stressed players’ need to play red-ball cricket when asked.
The conflicting reasons behind Iyer’s unavailability and the new directive from the BCCI add an interesting layer to the ongoing discussion about player participation in domestic cricket.
