Shami to miss the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to injury

The swelling in Mohammed Shami’s left knee has ruled him out of the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The news comes after India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, sought an update on Shami’s fitness following the Brisbane Test, prompting the BCCI to release a statement on the fast bowler’s condition.

Shami to miss the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to injury

Shami had bowled 43 overs for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy against Madhya Pradesh in November. He also participated in all nine games of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, with additional bowling sessions to build his workload ahead of the Test series. However, the increased bowling load resulted in minor swelling in his left knee, which was expected given the increased joint loading after a long break.

The BCCI’s medical team has determined that Shami’s knee requires further rest and controlled exposure to bowling workloads. As a result, the medical team has deemed him unfit for the final two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Shami has not featured for India since the ODI World Cup final in November 2023 and underwent surgery for a heel injury in February 2024. The BCCI confirmed that he has fully recovered from the heel injury and will continue strength and conditioning work at the Centre of Excellence to prepare for future matches.

Bengal did not name Shami in their squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy opener on December 21. The BCCI stated that his participation in the tournament will depend on the progress of his knee recovery
