Sunrisers Hyderabad has made a significant coaching change ahead of IPL 2024, with former New Zealand all-rounder James Franklin stepping in to replace Dale Steyn as the team’s bowling coach. Steyn, who had been serving in the role since 2022, has withdrawn due to personal reasons, according to sources.
Franklin’s Debut Coaching Stint at IPL
This appointment marks Franklin’s first coaching role in the IPL, despite his previous stint as a player with Mumbai Indians in 2011 and 2012. Joining Sunrisers, Franklin, known for his left-arm seam bowling and all-round abilities, will work alongside head coach Daniel Vettori. The duo has previously collaborated at Middlesex and Birmingham Phoenix, bringing a wealth of experience to the franchise. Franklin’s coaching resume includes a stint as head coach at Durham and his current role as an assistant coach at Islamabad United in the PSL.
Challenges Ahead for Sunrisers
Sunrisers Hyderabad faces a daunting task under the leadership of Vettori and Franklin, especially after finishing eighth in 2022 and sliding further to tenth in the previous season. One of the team’s main challenges has been the instability in leadership, with former players like Tom Moody and Brian Lara taking on coaching roles briefly.
Changes in Leadership and Player Composition
Ahead of the 2023 player auction, Sunrisers released long-time captain Kane Williamson, who had been a pivotal figure for the franchise since the departure of David Warner in 2021. Williamson’s departure signaled the end of an era for Sunrisers, as he had led the team to success in 2016 and remained their highest-paid player in 2022. Following Williamson’s exit, South African batter Aiden Markram assumed the captaincy.
Bowling and Squad Dynamics
Sunrisers boasts a formidable lineup of fast bowlers, including Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Pat Cummins, Marco Jansen, Umran Malik, and T Natarajan, among others. The spin department is anchored by Wanindu Hasaranga, Washington Sundar, and Shahbaz Ahmed. Franklin’s expertise will be crucial in harnessing the potential of these bowlers and improving the team’s overall performance in the upcoming IPL season.
