Rohit Sharma, the captain who has led the Mumbai Indians to five IPL championships, is set to be retained ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, as reported by Indian Express. Alongside Rohit, the franchise plans to keep Hardik Pandya, last season’s skipper, as well as Indian stars Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah.

However, Ishan Kishan is not in the team’s retention plans. Reports suggest that Mumbai Indians will try to re-sign him during the mega auction. Tim David is likely to be retained through a Right to Match (RTM) card. All IPL franchises can retain up to six players before the auction or use RTM options. The deadline to announce the retention list is October 31. Uncapped player Akash Madhwal is a strong candidate for retention at a capped price of ₹4 crore.
There remains uncertainty regarding who will captain the team. The franchise faced criticism last season when Hardik Pandya took over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma. Although Hardik has showcased his skills in international cricket, Suryakumar Yadav, now the Indian captain, is also a potential leadership option for the team.
The Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the table in the 2024 season and have made changes to their coaching staff, bringing back Mahela Jayawardene as head coach, replacing Mark Boucher. Additionally, Paras Mhambrey returns as the bowling coach. The franchise aims to regroup and strengthen its roster ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
