In a poignant moment at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, emotions ran high just before the India vs England third Test. Anil Kumble, the legendary Indian cricketer, handed over the Test cap to Sarfaraz Khan, minutes before captain Rohit Sharma headed to the middle for the toss. The atmosphere was charged with emotion as Kumble delivered a short speech, accompanied by cheers and applause from the Indian team members for the young cricketer from Mumbai.

Sarfaraz Khan's Father

A Father’s Pride: Naushad’s Tearful Embrace

As Sarfaraz received his Test cap, his father, Naushad, standing on the sidelines, couldn’t contain his emotions. With tears streaming down his cheeks, he took the cap from his son and kissed the badge on it. It was a poignant moment, symbolizing the fulfillment of a dream that the father had envisioned and the son had achieved through years of hard work and impressive performances.

Sarfaraz, though visibly moved, managed to compose himself. He wiped away tears from his father’s cheek and shared an emotional hug, recognizing that the journey had just begun.

The Journey of Perseverance: Overcoming Challenges

The road to this Test cap was not without challenges. Despite stellar performances in three outstanding Ranji Trophy seasons, where Sarfaraz displayed his batting prowess with centuries and challenged Don Bradman’s first-class average, he remained overlooked. Even during last year’s home series against Australia and the initial Tests against England, he was not the preferred choice. It was only when circumstances forced a change, with KL Rahul’s injury, that Sarfaraz finally earned his maiden call-up.

Assigned the No.5 position in the batting order, a slot he had dominated in first-class cricket for Mumbai with an impressive average of 69.85 in 45 matches, Sarfaraz faced an unexpected situation. Ravindra Jadeja was sent in ahead of him when India lost early wickets, altering the team’s planned batting order.

Apart from Sarfaraz, another debutant for India in this Test was Dhruv Jurel, who took over wicketkeeping duties from KS Bharat. The changes in the bowling department saw Ravindra Jadeja replacing Axar Patel, and Mohammed Siraj returning in place of Mukesh Kumar.

The line-ups for the match were as follows:

India XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (w), Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

England XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (c), Ben Foakes (wk), Rehan Ahmed, Tom Hartley, Mark Wood, James Anderson.
