In the 14th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals, RR skipper Sanju Samson found himself in a tense situation following a contentious decision regarding the team’s DRS review.

Sanju Samson argues with umpire over DRS call during MI vs RR match

During the fifth ball of the 11th over, with Ravi Ashwin bowling and Piyush Chawla on strike for Mumbai Indians, a full delivery down the leg side prompted an appeal from Samson for a caught behind. However, the umpire signaled a wide instead of responding to the appeal.

Believing the ball had brushed Chawla’s pads and wasn’t a wide, Samson smartly opted for the Decision Review System (DRS). The ball tracking technology confirmed contact with Chawla’s pad, validating Samson’s challenge of the wide call.

However, a temporary glitch arose concerning the use of RR’s review. The umpires mistakenly thought Samson had used it for the caught behind appeal. Recognizing the error, Samson swiftly approached the umpire to clarify, emphasizing the review was for the wide call, not the caught behind.

Ultimately, justice prevailed for Rajasthan Royals. The umpires reversed the incorrect wide call, and RR retained their review thanks to Samson’s calm explanation. This incident highlights the importance of clear communication during DRS reviews in high-pressure situations.
