Matthew Wade has officially retired from international cricket, transitioning immediately into a coaching role with Australia for the T20I series against Pakistan next month. Having been part of Australia’s squad in the T20 World Cup in June, it was expected that Wade’s international career would end following his exclusion from the September tour of the UK. He had already retired from red-ball cricket in March after Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield final run.
Continued Playing Commitments in the BBL and Franchise Leagues
Although Wade is stepping away from international duties, he will continue to play in the Big Bash League for the Hobart Hurricanes and participate in franchise leagues globally. Now, he’ll also join Australia’s youthful T20I squad as a coach, under the guidance of interim head coach Andre Borovec, while Andrew McDonald and other senior coaching staff prepare for the upcoming Test series against India. Additionally, Wade will assist informally during Australia’s ODI series.
Reflecting on His International Career and Move to Coaching
Reflecting on his decision, Wade said, “I was fully aware my international days were most likely over after the last T20 World Cup. My retirement and coaching aspirations have been a consistent topic of discussion with George [Bailey] and Andrew [McDonald] for the last six months.” He expressed excitement about the new opportunities in coaching that have recently opened up for him.
Wade’s career spanned 36 Tests, 97 ODIs, and 92 T20Is between 2011 and 2024, highlighted by his impactful role in Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup title win, especially his memorable 41* off 17 balls in the semi-final against Pakistan. He thanked his teammates, coaches, family, and especially his wife Julia and children for their support throughout his journey.
Cricket Australia’s CEO Nick Hockley congratulated Wade on his career and praised his versatility, stating, “Matthew has been an outstanding performer across all formats.” Hockley expressed excitement about Wade guiding young talent and adding energy to the Big Bash League with the Hobart Hurricanes.
