James Anderson will return to professional cricket after signing a one-year contract extension with Lancashire. The move will mark his first T20 appearance in over a decade, following his last professional match in July 2024 against the West Indies. After his farewell Test, Anderson took on a coaching role with England, but expressed a desire to continue playing. He entered the IPL auction in December but went unsold. Now, Anderson has committed to playing in both the County Championship and T20 Blast for Lancashire in the 2025 season.

“I’m excited to sign this contract with Lancashire and return to professional cricket,” Anderson shared. “This club has been a huge part of my career since I was a teenager, and I look forward to representing them again in both formats.” The 42-year-old has been maintaining his fitness during his coaching stint and is eager to hit the ground running when the county season begins in April.
Anderson, who made his debut for Lancashire in 2001, topped their bowling averages in 2024, taking 8 for 64 against Nottinghamshire. He has been linked to several T20 leagues worldwide and plans to make a comeback in the format, last played in 2014. Lancashire’s director of cricket, Mark Chilton, expressed his excitement about Anderson’s decision to continue his career, saying it would be an incredible boost for the squad and the club’s supporters.
Anderson is currently with England’s fast bowlers in Abu Dhabi ahead of their white-ball tour to India, and he will also be part of their coaching staff for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next month.
