Bates Joins Hobart Hurricanes as Overseas Replacement

New Zealand batter Suzie Bates will make her debut for the Hobart Hurricanes in the WBBL after signing as an overseas replacement player for the latter part of the tournament. At 37 years old, Bates has an impressive WBBL history, having played 100 matches across eight seasons for the Adelaide Strikers, Sydney Sixers, and Perth Scorchers. She is also the all-time leading run-scorer in women’s T20 internationals.

Although Bates did not get selected in this year’s WBBL draft, the withdrawal of England players for a tour of South Africa created an opportunity for her signing. Bates will replace Danni Wyatt-Hodge, who is likely to miss the last three games of the WBBL and possibly the finals if the Hurricanes qualify. England’s T20 players will leave for South Africa on November 17.

Hurricanes general manager Salliann Beams expressed excitement about Bates joining the squad, stating, “Bringing Suzie into our WBBL squad just made sense. We thought she would be the perfect replacement for Danni once we knew her availability.” Bates brings with her a wealth of experience, having played 167 T20I matches, making her a valuable addition to the team.

The Hobart Hurricanes’ WBBL squad now includes Bates alongside international players Chloe Tryon and Lizelle Lee, as they look to strengthen their chances in the tournament.
