Samoa’s Darius Visser made history by smashing six sixes in a 39-run over during a T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific Region Qualifier against Vanuatu in Apia on Tuesday. This incredible feat set a new T20I record for the most runs scored in a single over, breaking the previous mark of 36 runs, which had been matched five times before.
Visser’s record-breaking over came in the 15th over of the first innings, bowled by Vanuatu’s Nalin Nipiko. The over included three no-balls, with Visser hitting three sixes over deep midwicket off the first three deliveries. Nipiko then bowled a front-foot no-ball, and Visser dispatched the resulting free hit for another six. After a dot ball, where Visser’s straight shot struck the stumps at the non-striker’s end, Nipiko overstepped again and bowled a no-ball for height, which Visser pulled for another six. Visser flicked the final ball, a low full toss, over deep square leg for six, bringing the over’s tally to 39 runs.
Visser’s innings didn’t just break the over record; it also saw him become the first Samoa men’s batter to score a T20I century. His 132 runs, including 14 sixes, accounted for 75.86% of Samoa’s total score of 174, breaking Aaron Finch’s record for the highest percentage of runs in a T20I innings. Visser also contributed with the ball, taking a wicket as Samoa held Vanuatu to 164 for 9, securing a ten-run victory.
