As the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 approaches, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has stirred up discussions by unveiling his choices for India’s 15-member squad for the prestigious tournament.
Harbhajan has notably excluded the explosive all-rounder Hardik Pandya, instead opting to include players like Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, and uncapped talents such as Mayank Yadav and Harshit Rana.
Harbhajan revealed his preferred squad on his YouTube channel, with selections seemingly influenced by the ongoing IPL 2024 form, particularly Hardik’s struggles with the Mumbai Indians. The veteran spinner believes that India needs a strategic overhaul following their recent performances in ICC events.
Key Picks in Harbhajan Singh’s Squad
The 43-year-old has designated Rohit Sharma as the captain, supported by a robust batting lineup featuring Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, and emerging talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shivam Dube, and Rinku Singh. The squad divides the wicketkeeping duties between the seasoned Rishabh Pant and the stylish Sanju Samson.
The bowling unit is a blend of experience and youth, with Jasprit Bumrah leading the pace attack alongside Avesh Khan and the promising Mayank Yadav. Choosing between left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh and the uncapped Harshit Rana, Harbhajan has added depth to the spin department with Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravindra Jadeja.
Surprisingly, Harbhajan has left out established players like KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Ravi Bishnoi, Axar Patel, and Mohammed Siraj, signaling a shift towards a more aggressive and dynamic approach.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is slated to announce the 15-member T20 World Cup squad on May 1. Currently, the players are actively participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.
Players whose teams fail to qualify for the playoffs will head to the United States before the World Cup begins. However, those whose teams progress to the playoffs will join the national team after their respective IPL seasons conclude.
