Shubman Gill, the Indian captain for the five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe, has disclosed the team’s top order for the first T20I on Saturday, July 6.

Following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after their T20 World Cup 2024 win, India is searching for their next generation of opening batters. The next T20 World Cup is in 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, and this series marks the beginning of their preparation.
In a press conference at Harare, Gill confirmed he will open the batting alongside Abhishek Sharma, who is making his senior team debut. Ruturaj Gaikwad will bat at number 3.
“Rohit Bhai and Virat Bhai were openers in the World Cup, and I have also opened in T20s. So, I will open in T20Is with Abhishek Sharma, and Ruturaj Gaikwad will bat at No.3,” Gill stated.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, originally set to play in this series, has been rested for the first two matches due to his involvement in the World Cup-winning squad and the subsequent celebrations.
Gill acknowledged the pressure to perform following India’s historic World Cup victory and expressed his intent to build upon the legacy of Rohit and Kohli. He emphasized that every player has their own goals, and the pressure comes from striving to achieve them.
“Pressure and expectations are always there. What Virat Bhai and Rohit Bhai achieved is remarkable, and reaching that level is challenging. Every player has their own goals, and that’s the pressure. If you aim to reach where others have, it adds more pressure,” he added.
