Rosemary Mair out of England ODI series due to back injury

The New Zealand women’s cricket team has suffered a significant setback with pace bowler Rosemary Mair being ruled out of the remaining ODI series against England due to a back injury. This unexpected development forced the White Ferns to call up Molly Penfold as her replacement for the final match.

Mair’s Back Injury Sidelines Her Mid-Series

Mair, who recently made a comeback to the national team, played a vital role in the preceding five-match T20I series against England. However, during training before the first ODI, she experienced discomfort in her back, leading to her withdrawal from the opening match. Although she traveled with the team to Hamilton for the second ODI, Mair’s inability to train on Wednesday prompted the team management to rule her out for the remainder of the series.

Focus on Recovery for Mair: Coach Prioritizes Long-Term Fitness

Head coach Ben Sawyer expressed his disappointment about Mair’s situation. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing her full recovery, considering the upcoming cricket calendar, which includes tours of England and Australia, along with the crucial T20 World Cup in Bangladesh.

The timing of Mair’s injury couldn’t be worse for the New Zealand team, especially since England has taken a commanding 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. This follows their victory in the preceding five-match T20I series as well. England’s current dominance in white-ball cricket poses a significant challenge for the White Ferns.

However, the hosts are determined to salvage some pride and secure crucial ICC Women’s Championship points in the final ODI scheduled for April 7th in Hamilton. A strong performance is essential for the New Zealand team.

England’s Commanding Performance in Second ODI

In the second ODI, Tammy Beaumont’s outstanding 81-run knock earned her the Player of the Match award. Her brilliant batting helped England reach a formidable total of 252 runs. Nat Sciver-Brunt’s remarkable bowling spell, consisting of three wickets, further restricted New Zealand to just 196 runs, securing a comfortable victory for England with five overs to spare.

The final ODI promises to be an exciting encounter, with the New Zealand team desperate to avoid a clean sweep and England aiming to maintain their winning streak. All eyes will be on Molly Penfold to see if she can make a significant impact in her debut ODI match.
