Gautam Gambhir is a leading contender for the role of head coach for India’s men’s senior team after Rahul Dravid’s tenure ends. Alongside him, WV Raman is also being considered as a potential candidate for the position. Gambhir’s coaching experience includes mentoring IPL teams like Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders, helping KKR win their third IPL title in his first season. In contrast, Raman brings extensive coaching experience across domestic cricket, IPL, and the women’s national team.

Sources suggest that the BCCI is exploring ways to utilize both Raman and Gambhir effectively. This could involve Gambhir as head coach with Raman focusing on batting coaching or enhancing his involvement in red-ball cricket. The emphasis is on leveraging their combined expertise to benefit Indian cricket, especially as the team faces significant transitions in T20s, ODIs, and Tests in the coming years.
Raman’s close association with emerging players in U-19 and A series matches positions him well to support the team through upcoming changes. During the initial interview rounds, Gambhir participated virtually, while Raman attended in person. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) rigorously assessed both candidates’ suitability to lead the Indian team as they presented their coaching philosophies and plans for the future.
