The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released the schedule for the first 21 matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, with the remaining fixtures pending announcement due to the General Elections schedule. Challenges related to logistics, compounded by the elections, have made it difficult for the IPL governing council to conduct the tournament in the usual home-and-away format.
Despite these hurdles, IPL Governing Council Chairman Arun Dhumal remains optimistic about organizing the entire tournament smoothly, citing the successful management of the 2019 season during the General Elections. Arun Dhumal revealed plans to conclude the tournament by May 25 or 26 to accommodate the T20 World Cup in early June, necessitating an increase in double headers.
Acknowledging concerns about player fatigue due to the increased number of double headers, Arun Dhumal assured that the schedule would prioritize players’ rest and ensure adequate time between matches at different venues.
The 17th edition of the IPL will kick off on Friday, March 22, featuring defending champions Chennai Super Kings against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. During the initial phase, Gujarat Titans, RCB, and Delhi Capitals will play the most matches (five each), while Kolkata Knight Riders will have the fewest fixtures (three). The remaining six teams will participate in four matches each during the first phase of the tournament.
