The source of his distress stemmed from witnessing the promising start of his young teammate, Yashasvi Jaiswal, evaporate due to a deviation from Rohit’s guidance.
As the fourth day commenced with Rohit and Jaiswal at the crease, hoping to build upon their partnership of 40 runs from the previous day, the broadcast highlighted Rohit’s mentorship role. Throughout the series, Rohit had been instrumental in advising and guiding the younger players on navigating various match situations. Hence, it was particularly disheartening for him to witness Jaiswal disregarding his counsel and squandering his excellent beginning on Monday.
Jaiswal appeared poised to achieve yet another half-century, which would have equaled the highest number of such scores by a player in a series against England. However, his impulsive decision to take on Joe Root’s bowling proved costly. Root’s delivery tempted Jaiswal, who attempted a bold stroke, only to mistime it towards backward point where James Anderson executed a remarkable catch. Jaiswal departed for 37 runs, falling short of what could have been a significant milestone.
Video replays showed that Rohit was clearly upset with Jaiswal’s choice of shot. He scolded the young player before showing his disappointment by hitting his bat on the ground and briefly lowering his head sadly. Even though Rohit reached fifty runs soon after, England quickly took more Indian wickets, including removing Rajat Patidar for no runs. This put India in a tough spot, still needing 92 runs to win.
