Rickelton Shines as South Africa Defeat Afghanistan by 107 Runs

South Africa began their Champions Trophy campaign with a convincing 107-run win over Afghanistan, led by Ryan Rickelton’s maiden ODI century. Rickelton, who was in fine form after a strong SA20 season and a double century in Tests, scored 103 in just his seventh ODI. His knock, supported by fifties from Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram, propelled South Africa to 315/6 on a grassy Karachi surface.

Afghanistan faced an uphill task to chase 316, their highest-ever target in ODIs. Rahmat Shah fought hard with a fluent 90 off 92 balls, but with no other batter crossing 20, Afghanistan never looked in control. Kagiso Rabada (3/36), Wiaan Mulder (2/36), and Lungi Ngidi (2/56) dismantled the batting lineup, bundling them out for 208 in 43.3 overs.

Rickelton’s innings was a masterclass in controlled aggression. Despite losing Tony de Zorzi early, he kept the scoreboard ticking, punishing loose deliveries and rotating strike effectively. He shared a crucial 129-run stand with Bavuma, who also notched up a composed fifty. Rickelton reached his century with a push to long-off but was later run out in a bizarre fashion.

Markram and van der Dussen ensured a strong finish, adding quick runs in the last five overs. South Africa’s pacers then executed their short-length strategy to perfection, dismantling Afghanistan’s top order. Ibrahim Zadran’s dismissal to a 148.3kph Rabada thunderbolt set the tone for Afghanistan’s struggles. Though Rashid Khan provided brief entertainment with a late cameo, Rabada had the last word, dismissing Rahmat to seal South Africa’s first ODI win in six matches.
