Reports: Gambhir Appointed Coach to Guide Iyer’s India Return for Sri Lanka Series

Despite being omitted from the BCCI’s central contract list earlier this year due to disciplinary issues, Shreyas Iyer is poised to stage a comeback to the national side for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. This development follows his impressive leadership in leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to victory in the IPL 2024, where he played a pivotal role alongside mentor Gautam Gambhir.

Reports: Gambhir Appointed Coach to Guide Iyer's India Return for Sri Lanka Series

Iyer’s exclusion from the central contract came after he and Ishan Kishan faced repercussions for not prioritizing domestic cricket. However, the setback seemed to fuel Iyer’s determination, culminating in KKR’s title triumph in the IPL. Now, Inside Sport reports indicate that despite not being on the BCCI’s central contract list, Iyer is likely to join India’s squad for the ODI series scheduled in Sri Lanka from July to August.

Coincidentally, speculations about Iyer’s return surfaced shortly after Gautam Gambhir, KKR’s mentor, underwent an interview for the head coach position of the Indian team. While Gambhir’s appointment remains pending, the Sri Lanka tour could potentially mark one of his initial responsibilities if selected.

The resurgence of Iyer and the potential appointment of Gambhir suggest a strategic reshaping within Indian cricket, aiming to integrate successful IPL performers into the national setup. Additionally, there are rumors circulating about several young IPL talents earning their maiden call-ups for the T20I series against Zimbabwe. Players like Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, Mayank Yadav, Nitish Reddy, Harshit Rana, and Yash Dayal are reportedly under consideration for these opportunities.

Overall, the developments hint at a proactive approach by the BCCI to infuse fresh talent and experienced leadership into the Indian cricket team across different formats, setting the stage for an intriguing period ahead in Indian cricket.
