Rain and Poor Light Interrupt Second Day as Warner Departs Early in AUS vs PAK Match.

At the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), under gloomy conditions and with the lights on, Australia’s opener David Warner bid farewell to his Test career against Pakistan. Dismissed for 34 by Agha Salman before lunch, Warner’s final innings was met with disappointment as rain and bad light disrupted most of the second day.

Bad light halted play with Australia at 116-2 in response to Pakistan’s 313, drawing boos from the crowd and criticism from former players. Rain followed the interruption, lasting 40 minutes with 25,000 fans in attendance, leading to the official cancellation of the day’s play.

When play resumes on the next day, Marnus Labuschagne will be on 23, and Steve Smith on 6. Frustration echoed among players and cricket pundits, with former Australia coach Justin Langer expressing his discontent on Channel 7, highlighting the absurdity of not playing test cricket in such conditions, especially given the significance of Warner’s farewell match.

Despite the interruptions, Warner, playing in his 112th and final test, showcased glimpses of his prowess, surviving a chance when dropped at slip on 20. However, on 34, facing a delivery from Salman that gripped and bounced, Warner edged the ball to first slip, concluding his innings.

The anticipation for Warner’s last game overshadowed the earlier events of the match where Australia’s captain Pat Cummins took five wickets, securing his third consecutive five-wicket haul. Pakistan, after a shaky start at 96-5, rallied with a counterattack led by Mohammad Rizwan’s brisk 88 and contributions from Agha Salman and Aamer Jamal.

Conclusion:

With Australia already securing the series with wins in Perth and Adelaide, the focus leading up to the match was predominantly on Warner’s farewell. Accompanied by his three daughters, Warner led the team onto the SCG before the match, marking the end of an illustrious Test career.
