Leicestershire Cricket Club has appointed Peter Handscomb as their captain for the upcoming T20 Blast season, placing their trust in his leadership qualities despite his limited exposure to the format, notably in the Big Bash League (BBL).
While Handscomb’s recent appearances in the BBL have been sparse, Leicestershire’s director of cricket, Claude Henderson, expressed confidence in Handscomb’s capabilities, citing his broader cricketing experience. Handscomb, in turn, expressed enthusiasm for his new role. Emphasizing the team’s potential and their collective aim to perform at their best.
Having initially joined Leicestershire for the County Championship last year, Handscomb’s contract was extended, and he played a significant role in the T20 Blast, including serving as captain for three matches. His consistent performance, both with the bat and as a leader, led to a contract extension covering the upcoming seasons.
Leicestershire’s recent success in the Metro Bank Cup has bolstered their confidence, and they hope to replicate their white-ball form in the T20 Blast. Henderson highlighted Handscomb’s leadership qualities and on-field composure as key factors in his appointment.
Despite their struggles in the previous season, Leicestershire has strengthened their squad with new additions. Including Ben Mike, Liam Trevaskis, Scott Currie, and Ben Cox. With Handscomb and Wiaan Mulder as their overseas players, alongside the availability of Rehan Ahmed. Leicestershire aims for an improved performance in the upcoming tournament.
Leicestershire’s campaign in the T20 Blast begins on May 31 against Yorkshire, with the group stage running until July 19. The knockout stages, including the quarter-finals and Finals Day, are scheduled for September.
