In an effort to resolve the ongoing deadlock regarding the upcoming Champions Trophy, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has proposed a hybrid model, but with a condition. The PCB is willing to consider this model for the Champions Trophy, provided there is a written agreement ensuring Pakistan the same option for future global tournaments held in India.
Discussions between the PCB, ICC, and BCCI took place in Dubai, where the PCB suggested a long-term agreement. This proposal, which would extend beyond the 2025 Champions Trophy, calls for reciprocal provisions allowing Pakistan to play outside India during global events hosted there. The PCB and ICC have not yet decided whether the agreement will last for three years or until the current rights cycle ends in 2031.
India is set to host three global men’s tournaments: the 2026 T20 World Cup, the 2029 Champions Trophy, and the 2031 World Cup. Additionally, the women’s ODI World Cup will be in India in 2025. The co-hosted events provide a potential solution, though India-Pakistan matches remain a challenge.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasized that any arrangement must be based on equality, stressing that Pakistan’s respect is the priority. He added that Pakistan cannot continue hosting tournaments while India refuses to play there.
The BCCI has remained tight-lipped about the hybrid model, and the ICC Board will meet on December 5 to review the PCB’s proposal. The decision will also need approval from both the PCB and BCCI’s respective governments. Time is running out as the Champions Trophy is set to begin in just 77 days, and organizers still need to confirm the schedule and ticketing process.
