Before the IPL, Green’s most impactful T20 innings came as an opener or at number 3. However, under the guidance of RCB coach Neil McKenzie, he thrived batting between number 4 and 6. This flexibility gives the Australian team valuable options in the Caribbean.
Green acknowledges the advantage of not having a fixed batting position throughout his career. He’s comfortable adapting to different roles and feels he can contribute wherever he’s slotted into the lineup.
The middle order requires a different approach compared to the top order. Green admits it took him time to adjust to playing with fewer fielders out at the start. However, he’s learned to manage his innings and give himself time to settle in.
Green might not be a guaranteed starter initially, but his bowling could be crucial. He impressed with an economy rate under nine in the IPL, showcasing his ability to handle pressure in high-scoring situations.
Australia has been cautious with Green’s workload this year after a demanding 2023. They strategically managed his schedule to ensure he peaked for the T20 World Cup. Green acknowledges feeling more prepared than ever for a major tournament thanks to this approach.
While navigating between red-ball and white-ball cricket will remain a constant challenge, Green feels the experience he gained in the IPL this year has him well-positioned for the World Cup. He understands the need to prioritize certain formats at times, and trusts the team management’s decisions in that regard.
