T20 Blast Winning Captain Takes Over Leadership Role from Tom Abell

Lewis Gregory, from Somerset, will captain the team in the upcoming County Championship, taking over from Tom Abell, who stepped down last summer after seven seasons. Lewis Gregory, who captained Somerset to victory in the T20 Blast in 2023, now assumes the role of club captain for the County Championship.
Previously leading Somerset’s T20 side since 2018, Gregory temporarily delegated the reins to Abell in 2022. He further showcased his leadership credentials by guiding Trent Rockets to the Hundred title in the same year. Gregory has also captained a few first-class games, including one for England Lions against the touring Australians in 2019.
Abell cited the best interests of the team and the club when he resigned from the captaincy last year, following a relatively quiet season with the bat in red-ball cricket. Somerset, who has never won the Championship, finished sixth in Division One last season.
While there were speculations about Dean Elgar returning to Somerset as club captain, the South African cricketer opted to sign with Essex as a replacement for Alastair Cook.
Expressing his pride in leading Somerset in the four-day format, Gregory acknowledged the honor and responsibility that comes with the captaincy. He highlighted the excitement surrounding the team’s potential achievements, given the presence of multiple leaders in the dressing room.
Somerset’s director of cricket, Andy Hurry, praised Gregory’s leadership qualities, citing his success in T20 cricket and his ability to garner respect from teammates. Craig Overton, recovering from a back operation and not playing overseas this winter, has been named vice-captain, with Hurry commending his experience, leadership development, and contribution to shaping the team’s off-field operations.
