The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is actively considering former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson as a leading candidate for the head coaching position of the men’s national team. With the team currently lacking a head coach, the PCB aims to secure a permanent appointment before New Zealand’s upcoming visit to Pakistan for a white-ball series in April. The PCB is considering Shane Watson and former West Indies captain Daren Sammy for the head coaching role. However, despite initial approaches, both Shane Watson and former West Indies captain Daren Sammy have not reached a formal agreement yet.
Currently coaching the Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Watson has garnered attention for his positive impact on the franchise, guiding them towards playoff qualification for the first time in five years. However, his potential acceptance of the head coaching role with the national team may hinge on factors such as his existing commitments, including coaching duties with the San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket and commentary roles with Star Sports in ICC events and the Indian Premier League.
The PCB finds Watson’s coaching abilities and interpersonal skills demonstrated with the Gladiators impressive. Nevertheless, negotiations between the PCB and Watson may depend on the terms of his role, particularly regarding the amount of time he would need to spend in Pakistan. The board remains committed to securing the best coaching talent for Pakistan, with Sammy also under consideration due to his strong ties with Pakistan cricket, stemming from his tenure as captain of Peshawar Zalmi and his willingness to tour the country for the PSL final in 2017.
