The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is eyeing an opportunity to synchronize the Pakistan Super League (PSL) with the Indian Premier League (IPL) schedule, aiming to leverage the international cricketing window typically reserved for the IPL.
According to reports, the PCB recently convened a meeting with PSL franchises to explore the feasibility of hosting the PSL in April-May for the 2025 and 2026 seasons, aligning it with the IPL timeframe.
During the meeting, it was highlighted that the April-May window witnesses minimal international cricketing activity, presenting a prime opportunity to secure the participation of top players worldwide.
Sources familiar with the discussions noted that holding the PSL during this period would enable access to elite players, including those not selected by IPL franchises, thereby enhancing the league’s competitive edge.
The PCB assured franchise owners of support in signing marquee players, offering financial assistance and facilitating player recruitment processes.
In addition to recruiting marquee players, franchises will have the option to directly sign players, with adjustments made to the platinum category picks in the PSL draft.
The decision to align the PSL with the IPL schedule acknowledges the congested cricket calendar and the proliferation of leagues from October to February. Despite potential clashes between the two leagues, the shorter duration of the PSL offers a distinct advantage, with the IPL extending over a longer period.
Furthermore, the PCB announced plans to expand the PSL by adding two additional teams, increasing the total number of teams to eight starting from the 2026 season.
Traditionally held between February and March since its inception in 2016, the PSL’s potential alignment with the IPL schedule represents a strategic move aimed at maximizing global player participation and enhancing the league’s profile on the international stage.
