The ICC fined Pakistan’s players 5% of their match fee for a slow over-rate in their Champions Trophy opener against New Zealand at the National Stadium in Karachi. The hosts and defending champions suffered a 60-run defeat on Wednesday, and the ICC later found them one over short of the target after considering time allowances.

The charge was leveled by on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Sharfuddoula, along with third umpire Joel Wilson and fourth umpire Alex Wharf. Match referee Andy Pycroft imposed the penalty. Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan accepted the sanction, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.
Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct states that players lose 5% of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl on time. This regulation ensures teams maintain the required over-rate during matches.
Pakistan faced another setback on Thursday, with Fakhar Zaman ruled out of the tournament due to injury. The ICC has approved Imam-ul-Haq as his replacement. Fakhar’s absence is a blow to Pakistan’s batting lineup, especially ahead of their crucial clash against India in Dubai on Sunday.
With an early loss and a slow over-rate penalty, Pakistan will aim to bounce back quickly in the tournament. Their upcoming match against India presents a high-stakes opportunity to recover momentum.
