After weeks of speculation, the BCCI has officially appointed former South African fast bowler Morne Morkel as India’s new bowling coach. Morkel, who has recently served as the bowling coach for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, will begin his role with the Indian team on September 1. His first major assignment will be the upcoming home series against Bangladesh.

Morkel previously worked with Gautam Gambhir at LSG, where Gambhir was the mentor during the team’s first two seasons. This experience is expected to benefit Morkel as he steps into his new role with the Indian team.
The announcement was confirmed by Cricbuzz and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah. Initially, there were doubts about Morkel’s appointment, with some reports suggesting that the Roger Binny-led board was considering other options. For the recent series against Sri Lanka, Sairaj Bahutule had been appointed as the interim bowling coach.
Morkel’s coaching career includes a stint with Pakistan, where he served as the team’s bowling coach. He worked in this role during the 2023 World Cup. His appointment as India’s bowling coach is anticipated to bring a fresh perspective and valuable experience to the team.
