Litton to captain Bangladesh in T20I series against West Indies

Bangladesh has appointed Litton Das as captain for their upcoming three-match T20I series against the West Indies, making this his first time leading the team for an entire series. He previously stood in for Mahmudullah during the 2021 New Zealand tour.

The squad sees the return of batting all-rounder Shamim Hossain, who hasn’t featured in international cricket since December 2023. At 24, Shamim has played 14 T20I innings, scoring 254 runs at a strike rate of 115.98, with a highest score of 51. The selection of 21-year-old medium-fast bowler Ripon Mondol comes as a surprise. He impressed during the 2023 Asian Games, taking four wickets in three T20I matches as Bangladesh finished in third place.

Notably, regular captain Najmul Hossain Shanto is absent due to a hamstring injury sustained during the Afghanistan series in November. There is also uncertainty around Shakib Al Hasan’s availability and future in international cricket. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who led Bangladesh in the recent 1-1 Test series in the West Indies, continues as captain for the ongoing ODI series.

From the squad that played in India in October, Towhid Hridoy (groin injury), Mustafizur Rahman (on paternity leave), and Rakibul Hasan are missing. In their place, fast bowler Hasan Mahmud, left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed, top-order batter Soumya Sarkar, and middle-order batter Afif Hossain have been added.

The full squad for the T20I series against the West Indies is as follows: Litton Das (captain), Soumya Sarkar, Tanzid Hasan, Parvez Hossain Emon, Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Jaker Ali, Shamim Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Nasum Ahmed, Taskin Ahmed, Tanzim Hasan, Hasan Mahmud, and Ripon Mondol.
