Labuschagne Endorses Smith’s Potential Opening with Green at No. 4 for Australia

Marnus Labuschagne sees the prospect of Steven Smith opening and all-rounder Cameron Green batting at No. 4 as the “perfect scenario” for Australia in the upcoming Test series against West Indies. Labuschagne shared his thoughts in Brisbane before playing for Heat in the BBL clash with Perth Scorchers.

With the imminent squad announcement for the first Test in Adelaide. Labuschagne addressed queries about the batting order, particularly in the aftermath of David Warner’s retirement. Smith has expressed interest in moving from No. 4 to open, a position Green favors at No. 4.

Labuschagne expressed confidence in Smith’s ability to excel in the opening position, stating, “If Steve does get the nod [to open], I have no doubt that he will do a good job.” He emphasized Green’s excellent No. 4 record for Western Australia, expressing confidence in his Test success in that spot.

Labuschagne emphasized Smith’s excitement for the new challenge. Noting that it could extend his high-quality contribution to cricket for another few years. He believes the potential change in the batting order seems like the “perfect scenario” and acknowledged Smith’s readiness to open right from the start.

The key to this potential change, Labuschagne noted, lies in the desire of both players to embrace it. He expressed confidence in Green’s adaptability, emphasizing his even temperament, pressure-absorbing ability, decision-making skills, solid technique, and a strong defense – all essential attributes for success at No. 4 in Test cricket.

Labuschagne made clear that the plan to open with Smith and have Green at No. 4 isn’t criticism. Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris, and Matt Renshaw. He views it as a strategy, integrating the country’s top six batters into the Test squad. Green’s impressive Shield average supports this.
