In the lead-up to Match 39 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, pitting reigning champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), a familiar camaraderie was witnessed between KL Rahul and MS Dhoni during their practice session at Chepauk. LSG’s social media channel shared a heartwarming video encapsulating the bond between Dhoni and Rahul, particularly emphasizing Rahul’s admiration for the former Indian captain, given their shared roles as wicketkeeper-batsmen.
The video harked back to a significant moment in 2014-15 during the Boxing Day Test at the MCG against Australia, where MS Dhoni handed KL Rahul his Test cap. As the leader of the Indian side at the time, Dhoni played a pivotal role in nurturing young talents like Rahul. Despite Rahul’s initial modest contributions of 3 and 1 in both innings, India managed to secure a draw in that Test. However, it was in the subsequent Test match of the series at the SCG where the LSG captain showcased his mettle with a remarkable century.
Since then, KL Rahul and MS Dhoni have shared numerous cricketing battles together. With Dhoni’s retirement from international cricket, Rahul emerged as one of the frontrunners to succeed him behind the stumps, alongside Rishabh Pant.
