Kane Williamson to Leave NZ Central Contract, Step Down as Captain

In a significant development, legendary New Zealand cricketer Kane Williamson has declined the national contract for the 2024-25 season. The 33-year-old plans to step down from New Zealand’s white-ball captaincy to prolong his international career.

According to New Zealand Cricket (NZC), Williamson will still be committed to the BlackCaps but has chosen to pursue an overseas opportunity during the Test summer, leading to his exclusion from the contracts. Notably, New Zealand will play very little cricket this summer during the January window. As stated by NZC, Williamson will be available for selection outside that month. This means he can be part of the Kiwi squad for the eight World Test Championship matches and the ICC Champions Trophy in February-March next year.

Williamson remains open to accepting the Central Contract in the future. In his statement, the stylish right-hander said, “Helping push the team forward across the formats is something I’m very passionate about and something I want to keep contributing towards. However, pursuing an overseas opportunity during the New Zealand summer means I’m unable to accept a central contract offer.”

“Playing for New Zealand is something I treasure, and my desire to give back to the team remains undiminished. My life outside cricket has changed however – spending more time with my family and enjoying experiences with them at home or abroad is something that’s even more important to me,” he added.

Besides Williamson, ace speedster Lockie Ferguson, who recently achieved a unique bowling feat, has also hinted at opting out of the Central Contracts.

Regarding New Zealand, the BlackCaps had a forgettable T20 World Cup campaign, suffering a group-stage elimination following crushing defeats against the West Indies and Afghanistan.
