The cricketing community is in mourning following the passing of Papua New Guinea (PNG) women’s cricket team all-rounder Kaia Arua. Arua, a skilled left-arm spinner, tragically passed away at the young age of 33.
Making her debut in 2010, Arua quickly established herself as a vital member of the PNG team. She represented the nation in numerous East-Asia Pacific pathway events and Pacific Games cricket tournaments, consistently showcasing her talent and dedication. Her exceptional skills ultimately led her to a well-deserved spot in the squad for the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier, taking her talents to the international stage.
Arua’s leadership proved pivotal in achieving significant milestones for PNG cricket. Most notably, she captained the team to victory in the 2019 East Asia-Pacific T20 World Cup Qualifier. During her captaincy tenure, Arua led PNG in a staggering 39 T20 Internationals (T20Is) with official status, leading them to victory in an impressive 29 matches.
Her exceptional bowling prowess was undeniable. Arua secured a remarkable 59 wickets in T20Is, solidifying her position as the leading wicket-taker for PNG women’s cricket. Her bowling figures of 5/7 against Japan stand as the second-best in PNG’s T20I history, a testament to her significant impact on the team’s success.
Cricket PNG CEO Richard Done expressed his deepest condolences, acknowledging Arua’s immense contributions to the sport.
