Worcestershire’s Joe Leach made a triumphant return from injury, claiming 6 for 52 on day one of the Vitality County Championship match against Kent at New Road. After missing several games due to a knee problem, Leach’s performance helped Worcestershire bowl out Kent for 171 in 49.5 overs. His six-wicket haul, his second-best figures, came as Kent collapsed from a strong start at 73 for 0, losing 10 wickets for 98 runs.

New Zealand pacer James Hartshorn, making his debut for Worcestershire, supported Leach with a disciplined line and length, while Rob Jones stood out in the slips with four catches. Gareth Roderick led Worcestershire’s reply with an unbeaten 53, helping his team reach 137 for 2, trailing Kent by just 34 runs.
Kent’s Tawanda Muyeye started aggressively, scoring a 62-ball 56, but Worcestershire’s bowlers soon took control. After Leach’s switch to the New Road End, three wickets fell in 13 balls, turning the game in Worcestershire’s favor. The pressure continued post-lunch with Adam Finch and Hartshorn also contributing key wickets.
Kent’s new signings, Alfie Ogborne and Akeem Jordan, made their debuts, but Worcestershire’s bowlers dominated. Worcestershire ended the day in a strong position, with eight wickets in hand and Roderick anchoring the innings. They aim to capitalize on this advantage as the match progresses.
