Bangladesh’s struggles in ICC events continued as they crashed out of the Champions Trophy with underwhelming batting displays. They posted sub-par totals of 228 and 236 for 9, highlighting their batting frailties once again. Former India batter Wasim Jaffer criticized senior players, particularly Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah, for failing to deliver in crucial matches. Both played rash shots in the five-wicket loss to New Zealand, leaving Bangladesh in deep trouble by the 27th over.

Jaffer pointed out that apart from Shakib Al Hasan’s stellar 2019 World Cup, Bangladesh’s senior players have rarely stepped up on the big stage. He expressed disappointment at their shot selection, especially in a must-win game. Mahmudullah, known for past ICC tournament heroics, missed the first match due to injury and then played an irresponsible shot in the second. Jaffer believes Bangladesh should have posted at least 300 on the Rawalpindi pitch, making their bowlers’ task easier.

Former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond saw promise in Bangladesh’s bowling attack but emphasized that their batting remained a major issue. He noted that Bangladesh’s missed chances also proved costly. Rachin Ravindra survived a run-out on 26 and was dropped twice—on 93 and 106—before sealing New Zealand’s win. Bond felt those fine margins made the difference.

He also acknowledged the frustration coaches feel after such performances. While he stressed the importance of clear game plans, he warned against emotional reactions. Bond highlighted that execution matters most, and Bangladesh’s inability to do so ultimately led to their early exit.
