However, shortly before the IPL was set to commence, Raina had to unexpectedly depart from the team and return home. Speculation ran rampant about the reasons behind his sudden exit, fueling rumors and half-truths.
Putting an end to the speculation, Raina revealed the truth behind his departure, shedding light on the tragic circumstances that compelled him to leave the Chennai Super Kings team.
Raina revealed that he had to rush back to his family due to a devastating incident involving some of his close relatives. Gangsters tragically killed them, prompting his urgent return. He felt the urgent need to be with his family during this challenging time, prompting his departure from the CSK team just before the 2020 IPL season commenced.
“There was a bereavement in the family, and I had to go to Punjab. A gang of criminals in Pathankot tragically killed some of my relatives, including my grandmother. The incident deeply affected my entire family,” Raina recounted to Lallantop.
Despite the strict bio-bubble protocols in place during the IPL, which typically restrict players from leaving once they enter, Raina prioritized being with his grieving family over cricket. He emphasized that family comes first, especially during such trying times.
Following the ordeal, Raina made a resilient comeback in the 2021 IPL season and once again tasted success by winning the tournament with CSK. His unwavering determination and resilience exemplify his character both on and off the field.
