In a strongly-worded letter to IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, Director General of Health Services Atul Goel has urged the Indian Premier League (IPL) to completely ban alcohol and tobacco advertisements, citing their negative impact on public health. 🚭🍻

Goel emphasized that cricketers are role models for millions, especially the youth, and should not be associated with direct or surrogate advertising of harmful products.

🗣️ “IPL should strictly implement regulations banning all forms of tobacco and alcohol advertising, including surrogate ads, both inside stadiums and during TV broadcasts.”

He also called for:
✅ No sale of tobacco or alcohol products at IPL venues
✅ No promotion of sportspersons/commentators linked to such brands

📺 IPL’s Massive Influence on Viewers

With millions of Indians glued to their screens during IPL matches, the tournament is a goldmine for advertisers. However, Goel warned about the rising health risks associated with tobacco and alcohol consumption.

🩺 “India faces a massive burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic lung disease. These account for over 70% of annual deaths.”

🚬 India ranks second in global tobacco-related deaths, with nearly 14 lakh deaths annually.
🍷 Alcohol is the most commonly abused psychoactive substance in India.

Goel stressed that cricketers must use their influence to promote public health instead of endorsing harmful products.
