During the third day of the fourth Test between India and England in Ranchi, R. Ashwin surpassed Anil Kumble’s record for the most wickets taken in Tests in India. Ashwin’s tally reached 351 as he dismissed Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope. Anil Kumble had previously achieved 350 wickets in 63 matches in India at an average of 24.88, while Ashwin accomplished his feat in 59 Tests at home with an average of 21.40.
Additionally, Ashwin secured three more wickets in the second innings, marking his 35th career five-wicket haul, matching Kumble’s record. He also holds an edge over Kumble in terms of five-wicket hauls, boasting 27 fifers compared to Kumble’s 25. However, Kumble boasts seven ten-wicket hauls in a match, one more than Ashwin’s six.
In a remarkable milestone, Ashwin became the first Indian bowler to achieve 100 wickets against England in Tests. As it stands, Ashwin leads the list of most wickets in Tests in India, followed by Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Kapil Dev, and Ravindra Jadeja.
