New Zealand’s preparations for the Champions Trophy have hit a setback due to fast-bowling allrounder Lockie Ferguson’s injury scare. The 32-year-old suffered a hamstring injury while playing for Desert Vipers in the ILT20 Qualifier 1 against Dubai Capitals. Captaining the Vipers, Ferguson pulled up mid-spell and was unable to complete his over, with Mohammad Amir stepping in for the final delivery.
Injury Update and Scans

Ferguson underwent scans in the UAE, which indicated a minor hamstring tear. However, New Zealand head coach Gary Stead stated that further assessments are ongoing. “We’ve received the scans and are consulting specialists to determine his recovery timeline,” Stead told ESPNcricinfo. A final decision on his participation in upcoming tours will follow.
Growing Concerns for New Zealand
Ferguson also missed the Eliminator against Sharjah Warriors, with Sam Curran stepping in as Desert Vipers captain. His continued absence has raised concerns in the New Zealand camp, especially with the Champions Trophy opener against Pakistan in Karachi fast approaching.
As one of New Zealand’s most experienced pacers, Ferguson’s potential exclusion could weaken their attack. Seamer Jacob Duffy has been placed on standby, with teams allowed to make final squad changes until February 12.
The injury also impacts New Zealand’s plans for the February 8 Tri-Series against Pakistan and South Africa, a crucial preparatory event before the ICC tournament. Team management must now decide whether to risk Ferguson’s inclusion or look for alternative options to bolster their pace attack.
