After Rohit Sharma’s retirement, Hardik Pandya seemed the natural choice to become India’s T20I captain. However, the BCCI surprised many by appointing Suryakumar Yadav as the temporary captain instead. This decision was supported by the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, indicating that Hardik’s chances for the captaincy appeared slim.

Recent reports suggest that Hardik Pandya might still have a chance to lead in the future. The BCCI reportedly prefers Hardik for the captaincy but is concerned about his injury history. They want a captain who is fit and available for all major series. Consequently, Hardik has been asked to focus on his fitness and participate in all white-ball formats to regain his position.
According to a BCCI source, Suryakumar’s appointment is temporary, and there is still hope for Hardik to become the T20I captain. With the next T20 World Cup scheduled for 2026, Hardik has time to demonstrate his fitness and readiness.
Under Suryakumar’s leadership, India started strong by winning the T20I series 3-0 against Sri Lanka. Hardik is expected to return to the T20I squad for the series against Bangladesh starting in October. He will be keen to prove his critics wrong and show that he is capable of leading the team.
